A webinar hosted by the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Foreign Service Institute and the Philippine Archipelago International Trading Corporation featured important personalities in Traditional Chinese Medicine who were instrumental in China’s pandemic management.

The webinar featured prominent Chinese medical figures such as Academician Zhang Boli, Honorary President of the Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and recipient of the national honorary title of People’s Hero in August 2020, and Dr. Jia Zhenhua, Chief Physician of TCM, Doctoral Supervisor, and President of the Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

On the Philippine side, attendees heard from National Task Force Deputy Chief Implementor and Testing Czar Secretary Vince Dizon & NTF Contact Tracing Czar and Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, two of the most crucial figures in our fight against COVID-19.

The event began with remarks by Hon. John Kerry, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs. Teodoro Locsin, Jr. congratulated the co-presenters, the Chinese diplomatic core, and distinguished guests and speakers throughout his speech. He also created the foundation for our current COVID-19 disaster, estimating that over 4 million people have died and 186 million have been infected over the world. “In order to manage COVID-19, this webinar emphasizes information exchange as one of, if not the most important type of collaboration. “Our slogan is: No one is secure until everyone is protected,” he explained.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong spoke about Baguio City’s experience with the epidemic and how it dealt with it. He talked about how proactive contact tracing and control activities helped them control spreads, comparing it to a Hammer & Dance situation. He also spoke on the necessity of the PDITR plan, which stands for Prevent, Detect, Isolate, Treat, and Reintegrate. This method simply interrupts the communication chain. He also stressed the importance of cooperation in all preventive and control activities, not only in Baguio City.

The National Vaccination Program was discussed by Secretary Vince Dizon. He complimented the Chinese foreign service representatives for their consistent supplies of Chinese vaccinations, noting that China remains the country’s top source of COVID-19 vaccines, with 11 million doses procured and 1 million doses given. He also complimented Olivia Limpe-Aw, President of Philippine Archipelago International Trading Corporation and EUA Holder of Sputnik V Vaccines, for the vaccine’s continued supply.

Dr. Jia Zhenhua then went on to talk about how Traditional Chinese Medicine is used in China to prevent and cure respiratory infectious disease. During his presentation, he deconstructed COVID-19 using Collateral Disease Theory and discussed how it is treated using a Traditional Chinese medicine approach. Lianhua Qingwen pill was cited as a noteworthy treatment, which is already widely utilized and available in major drugstores in the Philippines.

Learning that there are two other TCM treatments for COVID-19 besides Lianhua Qingwen is new to us, so it has broadened our knowledge of TCM and that there are other options that we hope will be available in the Philippines in the coming months, especially since it appears that COVID-19 isn’t going away anytime soon, so we’ll have to deal with it – manage, mitigate, and move on so we can all move on and bring b.

This webinar was attended by Ambassadors, local government officials, health officers, hospital administrators, health workers and the media.
